Navytown, I'm impressed that you picked up on this trait and that it was one of the things that turned you away from going any farther with your study. This say's a lot about you as a person.
Your post reminds me of a tradgedy that happened in our Congregation. There was a family with 4 very cute little girls and each were each a year or so apart in age and were identical to eachother. They were like stair steps when you stood them next to eachother in order of age.
The 4girls along with another little girl from the Hall were splashing about at the edge of a small shallow river with as their Mothers looked on. Suddenly without warnig, a wall of water came rushing from upstream and the ensuing surge of water, washed two of the littlest sisters and the 1 other little JW girl, away. Aparrently they had released some water from the Dam upstream and the wall of water created enough of a current that it swept the girls away. They were found days later in another City near the mouth of the river.
The families and the congregation grieved of course but the Mother of the 4 girls ("M" ) and oldest surviving girl (who had clung onto her little sisters as long as she could) were inconsolable. They grieved for the longest time. One day in a car group out in service, a very sad "M"was at a door and an elders wife (mother of 4 herself ) said to the rest of us in the car " Oh I wish "M"would just get over it....she's needs a good slap....she's showing a complete lack of faith in Jehovah....doesn't she know she'll see the girls again in the New System"
This tragedy happened over 30 years ago and we still see the "M" and the two remaining girls(now grown and beautiful) from time to time. You can't help but think of the missing sisters and what it would have been like to see them all together. But like you Navytown, the words of that elders Wife, stuck with me and they really reflected the callousness some JW's develop regarding loss of life and the distorted view of what kind of greif is appropriate in situations like this. I saw this time and again over the years with individuals and I beleive it's a direct result of the constant steady diet of Armageddon talks at the meetings and assemblies and the harping on about the nearness of the new system and destruction of the worlds population that one reads in the publications.

I'd like to see a photo that shows them still hunkered down in the basement 3 months later when nothing has happened yet supplies and brotherly love have become scarce and they've begun using the letters from the society as toilet paper.

More JW bragging about the Landover, MD. convention. Please have barf bag at the ready before reading
by AndDontCallMeShirley inthe following e-mail is circulating among jws about the international convention at fedex stadium in landover, md.
note the all-too-familiar jw claims: everything they do (including the simple act of parking cars) is proof of jehovah'stm blessing, and everything wt did at the convention was the fastest, greatest, best ever.
oh, and the never-fails-to-get-mentioned alleged 'persecution'/resistance from some unnamed authority who tried to get in watchtower's way and hamper the effort...but jws prevailed anyway (as always):.

I'm glad Jehovah is blessing the parking arrangement.....maybe he's trying to encourage people to drive their own cars since riding the bus to the assembly sometimes doesn't go so well.

You should meet Brother Smart Engineer
by garyneal inmy wife, who now thinks i am not competent enough to discuss spiritual matters with the kids, thinks that i could really benefit from discussing matters of the bible with this nasa engineer who attends meetings at her kingdom hall.
apparently, he is quite knowledgeable in the bible and has a good grasp of their doctrines.
at least according to her as i never actually spoken with the man at length but i do know that he is an elder.

If a NASA Engineer or any highly educated person agrees with or becomes a JW, they feel it gives them more credibility and they'll quote him and use him as an example of how even intellegent ones can recognize the truth of their message. If that same person were to later point out the flaws in the doctrine or the science in the Bible, they'd dismiss him and say they are blinded by mere human thinking and knowledge and use him as an example of how dangerous higher education is to ones spirituality.
Your wife is impressed by his non JW credentials and assumes that if someone like him can accept the "truth" there must be more to it than even she herself realized and surely a smart guy like him should be able to hold his own with you better than she is able to.

Sorry but you're not a JW so you don't matter

Their spirituality is all in their heads since as we all know, JW's have the market cornered on true spirituality in this world. Everyone elses's prayers fall on deaf ears.

by jgnat intoday he kept bumping in to (or rather dodging and weaving from) fellow witnesses.
he's talking about returning but can't figure out a way to do it without enduring a fair amount of humiliation.
i did not panic.

Information is key to getting over the guilt they instill in a person. Ask him if he remembers how they were counting the days until the end came, back when 9/11 happened and the world trade centers came crashing down.
Then show him the video of the JW's doing Line Dancing at the Kingdom Hall and ask him if he'd ever have thought back on 9/11 that 13 years later we'd still be here and they'd be allowing Line Dancing at the Kingdom Hall.
Maybe it will help him to see what a joke all of it is.

WT Armageddon Logic
by Ding inin doing some research, i recently ran across a september 1, 2000 wt article that contained a brother's testimony about his years of service in the organization.. he said, "as we arrived for the meeting one sunday in 1938, two elderly sisters greeted us, and one said: `young brother, have you taken your stand for jehovah yet?
you know, armageddon is just around the corner!
' i knew that jehovah is the only true god, and i was convinced that this is his organization.

Why would the WT run a story like this?
Silly Ding....are you forgetting?? That article was written back in 2000 when they still believed that the 1914 generation wouldn't pass away before Armageddon arrived. Here we are 14 years later, everybodys gone....including the guy in the article I'm sure. Not only that....the 1914 generation idea has been extended out even farther. Like so much of the informaton in those oh so important and thought provoking articles.....it wasn't true and is no longer relevent (not that it ever was).
